In the southern expanse of the Indian subcontinent lies Bangalore, officially known as Bengaluru (Kannada pronunciation:, a sprawling metropolis and the capital of Karnataka. Boasting a populace exceeding 8 million, with a metropolitan throng of around 15 million, Bangalore emerges as India’s third most populous city and fourth most densely populated urban nexus. Nestled atop the Deccan Plateau, its altitude surpasses 900 m (3,000 ft) above sea level, blessing it with a salubrious climate perennially. It was in 1537 that Kempé Gowdā, a feudal lord under the aegis of the Vijayanagara Empire, erected a rudimentary fortress, marking the genesis of modern Bangalore and its venerable precincts, or pétés, which endure to this day. Following the demise of the Vijayanagara Empire, Kempe Gowda proclaimed sovereignty; yet, in 1638, an imposing Bijapur army under Adil Shahi auspices vanquished Kempe Gowda III, thus subjecting Bangalore to Shahaji Bhonsle’s jagir, subsequently ascending as his capital. Subsequent to the Mughals’ conquest, Bangalore transitioned into the domain of Maharaja Devaraja Wodeyar II of the Mysore Kingdom. The reins of governance eventually fell into the hands of Haider Ali upon his ascendancy to power.

The British East India Company annexed the city post the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War’s denouement in 1799, reinstating administrative sway, alongside regal dominion, to Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar III. The antiquated city burgeoned under the Maharaja’s suzerainty. In 1809, the British relocated their cantonment beyond the precincts of the old city, thereby catalyzing the emergence of a nascent township. In the wake of India’s emancipation in 1947, Bangalore ascended as the capital of Mysore State, retaining its status following the state’s territorial expansion and consolidation in 1956, culminating in its rechristening as Karnataka in 1973. The erstwhile discrete urban enclaves of Bangalore—the township and the cantonment—coalesced into a singular urban nexus in 1949. The extant Kannada nomenclature, Bengalūru, was enshrined as the city’s official designation in 2006.
